 "Infrared Thermometer" 2009-01-11
By J. Wescott (Ontario, CA USA)
The infrared thermometer does work as stated. I was extremely dissappointed in the fact that I need to constantly wash my hands while using it because of the warning that it may "contain lead" and I mainly wanted to use it in the kitchen. If I had been aware of the "lead" problem, I would not have purchased it.

This little gadget is a cool gift for any electrician. While its 15 amp current rating limits its usefulness as a professional meter, it is guarenteed to provide at least 2 days of amusement for beginners or even enginneers. Power Factor, frequency and kilo-watt measurements are usually high end multi-meter features.

 "Watt a killer device!" 2009-08-06
By Cindy (Georgia)
Every household out to have one of these inexpensive, efficient devices.

I've had mine for about a year now and still use it on a regular basis to try to keep a handle on our energy usage.

Even if you aren't a complete geek, I think you'll still enjoy being informed about the true cost of the dozens of little LED lights that are glowing in your house right now, as well as the big energy users that you expect to wipe out your bank account.

Once you start using this device, you'll become hyperaware of where your utility bill is coming from and can then be vigilant in paring down usage/costs.

One night I got up and realized that in my living/dining room I could see 18 different lights glowing on various appliances and electronics. I think when all was said and done, I had a total of 62 expensive, annoying, glowing lights that I couldn't get rid of (without a power strip) in our itty-bitty 1BR/1BA, low tech home. Truly amazing and appalling considering that I have whined about these lights for years (I think they make a house have a very cold, industrial, commercial, and decidedly un-homey, un-comfortable look and feel).

"I like the product but its accuracy could be better" 2009-04-25
By Jack A. Mracek (Yucaipa, CA)
This is a nice little IR temperature device that works OK. Myself, I was wanting something a little more accurate so I could make HVAC temperature measurements. I got it during the cold part of the year so temperatures can easily vary 40F. On the same sample point it would match a normal thermometer sometimes and be as far off as 10F other times. I then read the specs and they only guarantee an accuracy of +-10F over most ranges. I figure this is probably typical of this type of meter???? I kept it because it is a nice form factor and I can use it for reading temperatures on motors and electrical boxes but I found it not accurate enough for real precision work.

 "Good product" 2009-06-12
By N. Hodak (New Bern, NC)
PRoduct does what is advertised. I have been using it for about a month. To get an accurate reading you do have to be within about a foot of the object, the farther back you are the less accurate the reading. It beats using thermometers and having to wait several mintues for a reading.

I bought this product for 35$ more than the other options at amazon because the product description carried a range of temperatures of -40 to 700F. This is a mistake.  "When thermometer is cold, accuracy plunges" 2009-01-15
By Somebody You Don't Know (Portland, OR, USA)
I have enjoyed playing with this quite a bit. It is handy for cooking, for checking temperatures of things I don't want to touch (a wood stove, a bath of caustic chemicals for printed circuit board manufacture, etc.)

However, I have found that it is fairly inaccurate at the low end of the scale. For instance, on a recent snowy day for which the weather report read a consistent 20 degrees Fahrenheit (which was consistent with a non-IR digital thermometer I had when I left it in the snow for a while), the Fluke IR thermometer was sometimes reading at times between eight and zero degrees Fahrenheit.

I eventually figured out that the longer I had the thermometer outside, the lower its readings got -- if I took it out from a warm room outside and immediately took a temperature reading, it read approximately what I expected (20 degrees), but after about twenty seconds outside, it was reading 14 degrees, and the reported temperature kept dropping thereafter. (Note that I was using it to measure the temperature of the outside snow about 15 inches away from the thermometer.) This made it virtually useless for what I was trying to do (measure the temperature of a water faucet to determine if it was in danger of freezing).

I use the unit in the making of high heat confections. Modern microwave units do not have a high temperature sensor (300 degree) making accurate and predictable results unreliable. To get accurate readings from the unit, I remove the pyrex container from the microwave, point the Extech at the center of the mixture and know the exact temperature instantly. It is a good little unit that delivers on accuracy and convenience.

"Useful instrument at a bargain pricetag" 2007-09-22
By Jack P. Hailman (Jupiter, FL USA)
I bought this for an arcane research application (for which it was fine), but found it was also useful around the house. As we'd had trouble with A/C units and airflow in the vent system, I used this IR thermometer to check the outflow temperature and the wall temperatures around the rooms. It's easily precise enough for such uses, and other reviewers have already mentioned other home uses.

 "Great for the home" 2007-01-03
By Norman N. Mcdonald
The Output A/C temperature should be about 59 degrees (cooling) and 100+ for a Heat Pump or 120+ degrees for gas heat at the Ventilation Register. Keeping track of your own system's performance saves on calling the Repairman needlessly.

Measure the temperature inside your refrigerator to make sure it is cooling sufficiently and the freezer, too. If it's too high, save money by vacuuming the coils on the back or underside yourself to avoid component failure, again saving money on Service Calls.

Check the accuracy of your Heat and A/C Thermostat. If it is off, utility bills can escalate.

Great little investment that we use frequently.
