 "Not a Fluke, but still a worthy meter" 2009-07-12

I selected this meter based on the variety of measurements (including the IR thermometer, which I had used before in a lab) and the price. I find it is a very capable meter. I like the builtin stand, the backlight, the sharp probes and the large display.



The one area where it really falls short (and even led me to believe it was broken the first time I encountered a 470 in a lab) is the auto ranging. It is much, MUCH slower than a Fluke, and while it is auto ranging it displays the random outputs at the wrong ranges. That's the main thing that keeps me from giving it 5 stars. One other slight weakness is the audible continuity tester. My Fluke 10 has some minimum beep time which you can hear even if you barely brush something. The Extech's beep is on for exactly as long as the probes are connected. If you brush against something you might only hear a strangled click or screech.

The "Title" of this item indicates it comes with 2 K Type thermocouple probes. In the manufacturers description it infers the probes range is to 1832 F. "The truth is it comes with 1 type K probe only usable to 482 F". The other mis-representation is that it comes with a protective Holster. The truth is it comes with an orange protective rubber over cover.

I would like to see these inaccuracies corrected on the Amazon web site but cannot see a way to contact them.

Very handy tool for measuring temperatures around the home. Check the heating system around the home looking for hot and cold spots, check the temperature of items inside the refrigerator and the freezer, and check electronics in the entertainment center to see if they are too hot.



As an electrical engineer, I find it very useful for characterizing electronic devices I'm building. I can find the temperature of components in electronic circuits very quickly without the hassle of holding a thermocouple in place waiting for a good temperature reading.



It is a very simple, well made, and very easy to use device. Just point, press, and release to see the temperature quickly and easily of anything around the house or in your lab.

It takes several seconds until the value of measured AC current stabilizes. This is not acceptable in servicing industrial machinery. Fast measurement is often more important than knowing exact RMS value. Quick in other settings though. 1ms peak max function (max amplitude recorded) not that much needed than lacking on that model 100ms integrated max value (like it is on Fluke). IR non-contact temperature measurement is a nice feature. Built in multimeter is not necessary, every electrician should have a separate multimeter.

WHY THERE'S NO INDICATING BAR?

This meter does what is claims, but is somewhat marginal. The DC amps function always has a fairly large offset, and the readings are a bit slow to settle on volt scales, but for all it does, it's worth $150 or so.

No, it's not a Fluke, but it is a good cheap meter.

The placement of the display makes it hard to read while holding the meter. If you get your hand out of the way, it is clear and the backlight is bright.

The wheel functions are clear, but the buttons require reading the manual to understand how to use them.

The EX830 I ordered is sold by amazon as "Condition: New". But as I removed it from the packaging, it had a grimy appearance to it with a set of grease marks on the side of the case. With further inspection, I found some mild scratches on the clamp and on the bottom of the front panel. Inside the battery compartment of the meter was a dented, scratched-up 9-volt battery which was oddly suspicious. Everything about this meter just said "USED".



Things unfolded after testing the IR Temperature function. It was way off. I figured I'd calibrate it myself, but when I removed the cover, what I saw was parts covered in dust. I thought to myself: For something to gather that much dirt, it would have had to be used in the field--and it probably was for some time.



The unit also had some physical damage. The plastic housing for the IR sensor was cracked, and the PC-board had some poorly soldered components on it (usually a sign of some technician attempting to repair broken and/or cold solder joints by resoldering them). This suggests that the meter could have been exposed to extreme shock which would explain the cracked housing of the IR sensor.



I also discovered that a surface-mount potentiometer, used for calibrating the IR Temperature, was the cause of the erratic temperature readings and needed cleaning.



I had no choice but to fix this thing myself, since I don't have the luxury of waiting a week or longer to get a replacement (and for all I know, the "NEW" replacement might be worse off).



So now I have a "NEW" refurbished meter that I had to clean and repair. But it will be the last thing I buy here.
